Family Fun and Charity Events for Thanksgiving

Metro Denver is blessed with a wealth of fun family events and charitable endeavors that provide the perfect opportunity to help those less fortunate by volunteering your time and effort during the holiday season. Following is just a sampling of events for the whole family and charitable endeavors designed to make Thanksgiving 2017 more pleasant and hopeful for those in need.

The 43rd Annual Mile High United Way Turkey Trot is scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, November 23rd at Washington Park. The four-mile race and quarter-mile family fun run is expected to host over 10,000 participants in support of Mile High United Way’s work in the community to improve the lives of children, families, and individuals in need. This year’s Turkey Trot will include a start and finish village featuring entertainment, music, booths, and a beer garden sponsored by Great Divide Brewing Company. The 2017 Denver Feed A Family is scheduled for Saturday, November 18th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Commemorating the spirit and generosity of “Daddy Bruce” Randolph, The Epworth Foundation and its generous sponsors have distributed all proceeds towards producing Thanksgiving baskets for the community. Each year, an average of 37,000 people are fed through the Denver Feed-a-Family program and over 350,000 pounds of food are distributed. No funds go toward any overhead or general operating costs for The Epworth Foundation or any of its partners. Hundreds of volunteers are needed. The Salvation Army Thanksgiving Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, November 23, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Denver Convention Center, Hall B. The Salvation Army continues its annual tradition of providing a good All American Thanksgiving Meal to those in need. On Thanksgiving Day, the Salvation Army serves hundreds of homeless individuals from the Denver Metro area, and there are numerous volunteer opportunities to offer that day. The Downtown Denver Grand Illumination is slated for November 24th at 6:00 p.m. at the City & County Building at 1437 Bannock Street. The event will light up Downtown from Denver Union Station to the City & County Building at Civic Center Park. The lights stay on through the end of December.

The Polar Express Train Ride is scheduled from November 9th through December 23rd. The beloved children’s book comes to life in this fun train ride. There is a theatrical recreation at the Colorado Railroad Museum that takes place inside a real train car, complete with cookies and hot chocolate.

Santa’s Village at Chatfield is scheduled for November 24th through December 24th at Chatfield Farms at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Bring the kids to meet Santa and his reindeer, make crafts with Mrs. Claus and take a magical hayride under twinkling holiday lights at Santa’s Village. Afterward, the whole family can shop for handcrafted gifts in Santa’s workshop.

A Christmas Carol is slated for November 24th through December 24th at the Stage Theatre at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Keep the holiday spirit flowing with this classic Christmas tale from Charles Dickens. A Christmas Carol is the ultimate holiday treat for theatergoers young and old.
